Surgery information in English

Before operation

It is of high importance that we have an updated medical record when you arrive for the operation. If you are taking any medication to prevent thrombus or other blood thinners, it is of great value for us to know this in beforehand. If your prescribed medication is Waran® your INR-level need to be less than 2, 5 on the day of operation. Please contact your heart doctor in time to regulate your medication.
If you have been treated with bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax to prevent osteoporosis, oral surgery can be dangerous. Please inform us when you come to the consultation.

Operation

You will receive the following medication at your arrival before the operation:

  • Penicillin: 2g Amimox (or 600mg Dalacin in case of allergy).
  • Paroex: Antibacterial mouth rinse to lower the bacterial levels in the oral cavity.
  • Local anaesthesia
  • Midazolam: This is optional! This medication is to lower possible anxiety. If you decide to take this medication it is important that you arrive 30 minutes before scheduled operation. Midazolam is a short-acting drug to lower anxiety, diminish muscle tension and has a sedating effect. Due to the side effects such as temporary short term amnesia (memory loss), we recommend that a family member or friend accompanies you after surgery and takes you home. Midazolam cannot be used by patients with sleep apnoea and you are not to drive within 24 hours after operation.

When preparing you for operation, your face will be washed with disinfectant and you will be covered with a sterile operational drape. The purpose of the drape is to protect the operation area from bacteria and to protect your eyes. We recommend that you refrain from cosmetics on the day of operation.
The duration of the surgery is between 20-60 minutes, depending on the extent.

After surgery

After the procedure you will be given a small bag of ice to cool down the operated area. We highly recommend that you continue to cool the area when you come home. The cold helps to decrease bruising and swelling.

Smaller operations seldom causes swelling, pain or bruises. Larger operations, combined with blood thinners such as Waran® or Trombyl®, usually causes swelling that after a couple of days turns to blue or yellowish bruises. More complex operations in the lower jaw can some-times cause sensory impairments (numbness) in lip and chin area after operation, however this side effect is rare. Any medication needed after surgery will be provided for you.
Discomfort and ache after surgery varies in individuals.

To secure the best prognosis for your dental implants it is of importance high value that you decrease your smoking and have a good oral hygiene.
